When should it happen?
The golden rule is: First visit by the first birthday. This might seem early, but it's the perfect time to check for proper development and catch any early signs of decay from bottle feeding.
What happens during the visit?
For very young children, we often do a "lap exam" where the child sits on your lap facing you, and lays back onto the dentist's knees. It's quick, gentle, and comforting. We check:
- Number and health of teeth present
- Gums and soft tissues
- Bite and jaw alignment
- Risk of cavities
How to Prepare
Keep it positive! Avoid using words like "pain," "shot," or "drill." Tell your child they are going to meet a tooth doctor who will count their teeth and make them sparkle. You can even "play dentist" at home to practice opening their mouth wide.
