More Common Than You Think
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cavities are the most common chronic disease of childhood in the United States. In India, the prevalence is also significant. Studies suggest that by age 4 or 5, over 20% to 40% of children have at least one cavity. So, if your child has a cavity, you are certainly not alone.
Why Do Toddlers Get Cavities?
Several factors contribute to "Early Childhood Caries" (ECC):
- Bottle Feeding at Night: Letting a child sleep with a bottle of milk or juice allows sugars to pool around the teeth all night, causing rapid decay ("Baby Bottle Tooth Decay").
- Dietary Habits: Frequent snacking on sticky foods like gummies, chocolates, or biscuits increases the time teeth are exposed to sugar.
- Improper Brushing: Young children do not have the manual dexterity to brush effectively. Parents must supervise or perform brushing until at least age 7-8.
- Lack of Fluoride: Not using fluoride toothpaste or having low fluoride levels in water can weaken enamel.
Can It Be Prevented?
100% Yes! Cavities are largely preventable.
- Wean off the bottle by age 1. Use a cup instead.
- Clean teeth twice daily (use the 2-2-2 rule!).
- Limit sugary snacks to meal times only.
- Apply Dental Sealants and Fluoride Varnish at your dental visits for extra protection.
