Parent brushing baby teeth

Start Before the First Tooth

Good oral hygiene begins even before teeth erupt. Wipe your baby's gums with a clean, damp washcloth or gauze pad after every feeding. This removes bacteria and gets them used to the sensation of cleaning.

When the First Tooth Appears

Once that first tiny white pearl shows up, it's time to switch to a toothbrush.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Choose the Right Brush: Use a soft-bristled, small-headed toothbrush designed for infants. Finger brushes are also great for beginners.
  2. Toothpaste Amount: Use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). Do not use more until they can spit (usually around age 3).
  3. Positioning: Sit comfortably with your baby in your lap, facing away from you, or lie them down on a changing table. This gives you better visibility and control.
  4. Technique: Gently brush in small circles on the front, back, and chewing surfaces of the teeth. Aim for the gum line where bacteria love to hide.
  5. Duration: Aim for 2 minutes, but be patient. Singing a song can help pass the time!

What If They Cry?

It's normal for babies to fuss. Stay calm, make it a game, and be consistent. If you make it a routine, they will eventually accept and even enjoy it.
