Going Beyond the Basics
You might have heard of brushing twice a day, but for children prone to cavities or those wanting the best protection, pediatric dentists often recommend the 3-3-3 Rule. It's a simple memory aid to keep the routine vigorous and effective.
1. Brush 3 Times a Day
Instead of just morning and night, add a brushing session after lunch or school. This ensures food particles don't sit on the teeth for distinct periods during the day, reducing the acid attacks that cause cavities.
2. Brush for 3 Minutes
The standard recommendation is 2 minutes, but increasing it to 3 minutes allows for a more thorough cleaning. This extra minute ensures every nook and cranny—especially the molars and behind the front teeth—gets proper attention.
3. Change Brush Every 3 Months
Worn-out bristles can't clean effectively and may even harbor bacteria. Changing the toothbrush (or electric brush head) every 3 months—or sooner if the bristles are frayed—keeps the cleaning tool at peak performance.
Is This Right for Your Child?
While the standard 2-2-2 rule works for many, the 3-3-3 rule is excellent for children with braces, spacers, or a history of cavities. Ask Dr. Swathi which routine is best for your child.
